Sustainability

Caring for nature, people, and the local community

The north is our home, which we cherish in everything we do. Our holistic responsibility is a matter close to our hearts. We respect the fragility of Lapland's nature and the local communities. Alongside the environment, caring for people—both our staff and our guests—is equally important to us. We continuously develop our sustainability efforts and actively seek new ways to improve our operations.

We care for our employees

For us, a skilled, committed, motivated, goal-oriented, and satisfied workforce is key. We invest in good leadership and fostering a culture of engagement. Compliance with laws and regulations, as well as paying wages in accordance with collective agreements, are the fundamental principles of our human resources management.

The well-being of our staff, both at work and during their leisure time, is important to us. We enhance our employees' professional skills through comprehensive onboarding and various training opportunities. We also support the overall well-being of our staff by promoting physical activities.

We care for our guests

For us, the responsibility for our guests' safety is the foundation of all our operations. It's also important that our customers can act responsibly while using our services and make sustainable choices.

We continuously develop safety measures and implement new services to enhance it. In our accommodation services, we utilize the PRO24.fi safety management system. We ensure thorough annual safety training and inspections by authorities. In addition to self-monitoring, our restaurants are subject to Oiva reporting conducted by authorities.

In our slope services, our staff, who undergo annual safety training, are responsible for our guests' safety. We continually improve slope and snow safety. Safety signs and guidance in the slopes support the safety of our guests.

Balanced relationship with nature

We take care of our environment and strive for a balanced relationship with nature by protecting the northern Arctic wilderness. We continuously develop new environmentally friendly practices.

In our accommodation services, we closely monitor energy consumption and implement various measures to minimize it. Some of our hotels utilize pellet-based heating, and we avoid disposable packaging as much as possible. All our hotels (excluding SnowVillage) offer electric vehicle charging for our guests.

We use only green electricity across all our hotels and throughout the group, which consists of 100% hydro, wind, and bioenergy. The use of green energy in our hotels reduces annual CO2e emissions by over 4,000 tons compared to conventional electricity.

Minimizing food waste is an essential part of our environmental responsibility in our restaurants. Naturally, we also recycle bottles and kitchen waste fats.

Our slope services operate in the embrace of fragile nature, further emphasizing our commitment to environmental care. All fuels and lubricants we use are of the most environmentally friendly quality. We have oil separation equipment and oil-free air compressors for snowmaking. We optimize the operation of our slope machines and minimize the operating hours of slope lighting. We are also involved in the Green DMN and Motiva's Energy Efficient Ski Resort projects.

We support the circular economy by recycling all machines and sleds, retired hotel textiles, furniture, and workwear.

We value local communities

We have been operating locally since 1965. We respect the local culture and population, and we are one of the key players in the area. Developing year-round operations is the foundation of sustainable development—over the long term, we aim to increase year-round employment opportunities, thereby boosting tax revenues and overall well-being in the region.

We honor local communities by paying taxes to the area where we operate, hiring local residents, and using local service providers and raw materials. We are members of local organizations and associations, and we support a vibrant environment by maintaining and renovating existing buildings.

We have been awarded the Ekokompassi certification

For us, environmental responsibility means taking concrete actions in our operations. We are committed to conserving natural resources and increasing our positive impact on the environment. The Ekokompassi certification granted to Lapland Hotels and its sister companies in May 2022 serves as a testament to our comprehensive commitment to developing and maintaining environmental responsibility. This certification applies to all areas of our tourism operations, which include a wide range of hotel and restaurant services, five ski resorts in Lapland, and the largest activity service company in the Nordic countries, Lapland Safaris.

Receiving the certification requires a commitment to conserving natural resources, enhancing positive environmental impacts, and conducting precise annual monitoring and reporting. The certification is granted for three years at a time. Ekokompassi is an industry-independent environmental organization based on the international ISO 14001 standard. The system is owned by Finland's oldest and most influential environmental organization, the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation.

For instance, all locations in our group switched to using 100% green electricity two years ago. One of the most visible measures for our customers has been the improvement of waste management in our hotels and ski resorts. Lapland Hotels has taken a leading role in Lapland, where comprehensive recycling points are not a given in sparsely populated areas.

Examples of our concrete actions to conserve natural resources

  • All our locations use only 100% green electricity, sourced from hydropower, wind power, or bioenergy.

  • We provide the option to charge hybrid and electric cars at all our sites (excluding Lapland Hotels SnowVillage).

  • We prioritize local food and sustainability. For instance, at Lapland Hotels Bulevardi, we grow our own herbs, and instead of disposing of coffee grounds as waste, we repurpose them as a growth medium for oyster mushrooms, which we serve as a delicious side with our omelets at breakfast.

  • We serve as a pioneer in Lapland, where comprehensive recycling points are not a given in sparsely populated areas. We were the first to initiate organic waste recycling in several ski resorts and hotels in Lapland.

  • We avoid single-use packaging, recycle bottles and kitchen waste grease, and implement measures to minimize food waste.

  • In accommodations where heating options allow, we use pellet-based heating systems.

  • Nearly 100% of our snowmobile routes are operated with the market's least polluting four-stroke snowmobiles.

  • The emissions from our snowmobile safaris are compensated by contributions to Gold Standard certified projects.

  • We are involved in the development of snowmobiles aimed at making them even safer and more environmentally friendly, reducing both noise and exhaust emissions.

  • Our snowmobile safaris are conducted only on official trails.

  • We participate in an Animal Welfare program.

  • We have a cooperation agreement with Metsähallitus’ nature services regarding sustainable nature tourism principles.

  • We are a member of Pidä Lappi Siistinä ry (Keep Lapland Clean).

  • The operating hours for our ski resort lighting have been minimized.

  • We utilize oil separation equipment and oil-free air compressors in the snowmaking processes at our ski resorts.

  • We regularly train our staff to act responsibly and prioritize safety in their daily operations.

  • A key criterion for selecting our partners is their commitment to sustainability. Our main partners, such as Comforta, Arla, HKScan, and Kiilto, have all made sustainability a central theme in their operations.
