Set in Lapland in the autumn of 1944, Lapland War takes place during the conflict between Finland and Germany in the final stages of World War II. Young soldier Heikki fights on the Karelian Isthmus alongside his friend Pauli. Their company is joined by Arvo, a former prisoner whose outlook challenges the others’ views on war and duty.

An armistice raises hopes of returning home, but it soon becomes clear that Finland must turn against its former German allies in Lapland. At the same time, in Rovaniemi, Saara, who works as an interpreter for the Germans, faces a life-changing decision: remain in Finland or flee to Germany with her beloved, Major Duisberg.

Lapland War is a deeply human story about people caught in the midst of historic upheaval. Amid the horrors of war, they search for meaning, humanity and forgiveness – asking how compassion can be found in the harshest of circumstances.
